Customer Review: “This is my first go at making cold brew at home. I bought a mason jar with handle & spout (works great) with comes with a metal filter cone (not useful). At least with my well researched coffee:water ratio – and now limited practical experience – the cone will have coffee higher than the water you would use. And, it’s a pain to get the grounds out afterwards.This french press works much, much better. First, you get more coffee to water contact. Why try to keep them apart? It’s almost cruel. Second, should you choose you can really press the coffee out of the grounds to get every drop (you may get a little more sludge). Third, because it’s got the widest of mouths it’s the easiest dump out and clean.However, I DO recommend the mason jar handle/spout as a cool and practical container for the brew you will make from your concentrate. Just put the filter cone aside or put it on your coffee table as a conversation piece. It looks better than it works.I’m still working on perfection but here’s what I’ve got so far.- 5.5oz course ground coffee. So far I like Eight O’Clock for value but I’ll play the field. Dump grounds into french press.- Add 40oz clean water. Stir, cover. Leave for 24-36 hours with a good stir once or twice. I get noticeably better taste when I leave it out at room temp rather than “brewing” in the fridge.- Press the coffee. I get about 32oz of cold brew. I pour it into my mason/handle/spout thingamajig. Add 12oz clean water for approx 44oz (don’t hold me to it). Shake and place in fridge.- Dump the grounds, rinse or wash it out. You be you.”

If you like coffee but wish it had a smoother taste, cold brew will likely be the answer. I have two more suggestions: investigate local coffee roasters. The absolute best coffee I’ve ever had is from a local brewer. My favorite independent coffee house sells it. It’s a bit pricier than the premium coffees in grocery stores but this is one thing I refuse to go low quality on. I’d rather drink less coffee than pay good money for subpar coffee, Fun fact: The coffee from France is some of the WORST in the world! It’s always been believed to be some of te best, even having a type of roast named after it but this fallacy is likely the result of actual fiction, namely literature and movies. A French prime minister famously said French coffee was donkey pi**! Allegedly, the reason a notoriously proud people put up with such a disgrace is, again allegedly, because the national industry is controlled by a mafia group that no one dares to challenge. Some believe the government is equally afraid of this group while others believe they’re simply well paid to look the other way. Sadly as an American, I can see either reason being equally true. The French citizens usually get their coffee from neighboring Italy or have it shipped in from Africa. Speaking of Italy, if you don’t have a local roaster, try Illy from Italy. Totally worth it. You can get it in most stores now. Some swear by the in store Dunkin Donuts brand of coffee. Second tip: Make/decant your own flavored syrups. Save your wine bottles, make simple syrup, and then add the extract of your choice: vanilla, almond, coconut, rum, then decant (you can purchase packages of pouring spouts online or find them in kitchen stores. You can even make a liquid caramel to use as a syrup. You can find the techniques for everything online. They’re all dead simple! Cheers!”

Simple and easy to use design.I make decaf concentrate because it’s hard to find ready made. I get a high quality, medium-course ground bean. I found soaking around 20 hours gives me the level of flavor I want and not bitter (though quality of beans makes a difference here). I remove the filter core and leave the concentrate in the pitcher and refrigerate.It is less expensive than buying concentrate or coffee shop drink (if you can even find decaf coldbrew) but I wouldn’t say it’s cheap either. The amount of grounds you have to use is more than typical brewing. The amount of concentrate you use will depend on your preference and type of beverage so determining value or cost effectiveness is subjective.I found that making 1 pitcher a week during the summer was just the right amount to treat myself.The pitcher is not big and yet almost too tall for the bottom shelf and doesn’t fit in the door pockets of my fridge. If it was a little shorter and slightly bigger around would be better. I usually just rinsed everything well between brews.The filter is trickier to clean because of its shape but not terrible. I found that if i knock most of the used grounds out and let the remaining dry out it’s a little easier to manage. The filter hasn’t become clogged so far but vinegar and warm soapy water would probably be sufficient. Time will tell if the plastic parts all hold up. The pitcher is that rigid style with no flexibility so could be prone to cracking.I recommend this if you enjoy coldbrew, don’t want to leave home to get it, and want a simple way to soak the grounds.Cheers!”

I came to the conclusion, I am a single person so a single serve was a good choice. Being overwhelmed with so many bells and whistles on many it was overwhelming. Ease of use and care played a big role in decision making. Choice of size, weight, beeps when ready feature and color became a factor. I chose this particular maker, not solel on reviews but I really loved the looks and simplicity of use. I do not own a coffee mug, I use my vintage coffee CUPS that are just below 6 oz. I read reviews on spattering all over when filling cups and not mugs, it’s as simple as using a small ramekin upside down to raise the coffee cup just under the drip. I like the removable water tank for easier filling and cleaning. The unit shuts down after a few minutes and you just press any pad to wake it up. I can get 2 cups of coffee with one kcup using my coffee cup verses a mug. I have never liked mugs as my coffee always got cold before drinking it all and for me a single cup with a saucer is all I need. I never drink coffee while on the go because coffee is a diuretic and can create uncomfortable situations. If your looking for just a coffee maker for the convenience of instant coffee using either the kcup or ground coffee single use without the long wait of a drip, percolator, french press, old or new, then this coffee maker is a wise choice. I also love the small foot print. I bought the 36 kcup organizer and is a perfect base this coffee maker. At some time I will try the Tea and Iced Coffee features. Customer Review: “I will start out by saying that I’ve been making my own cold brew for approximately 2 years now. Prior to this, I was “wasting” a lot of money buying cold brew on a nearly daily basis. I love a cold glass of cold brew in the summer after dinner. It’s usually my dessert! I also love the taste of coffee, and I only add a little milk (sometimes half/half) to my cold brew, no sweetener.I have been more than happy with my County Line Mason Jar cold brew maker. I’ve had it for two years and never once had coffee grounds in my finish product. It makes an extremely strong cold brew. Only downfall is the 14 plus hours to make it! There have been many of nights that I wanted to kick myself for forgetting to make it when it ran out! Enter the “Dorothy”! What a fantastic idea, I thought. I wondered if it would work. I read through the reviews, and depending on what you want to believe, some say yes, other said no. Here is MY opinion after using this for about a month now.It does work! I can say that what I’ve made in this rapid brewer has tasted fantastic, and I have not had any grounds in my finished product (although it can be a bit cloudy/silt). I think that silt is a problem more with the French Press, which this is like! I have never had an issue getting the “tornado”, or whirlpool to form. I can say that when using filtered refrigerator water that you will have to double (possibly triple) the amount of time needed to make the coffee as strong as you would with room temperature water. I have also noticed a difference in cold brew strength depending on how fast the coffee is introduced to the “tornado”. The instructions say to add the coffee slowly, so definitely do that! I have now been filling the carafe slightly below the max line (using refrigerated water), using 2/3 cup of coffee grinds (store purchased, but not freshly ground), and running this for an hour. I’ve gotten into the habit of starting this process while I’m cooking dinner. Bottom line here is that I don’t think you can obtain “concentrate strength” cold brew with the Dorothy, but filled close to the max will give you more than enough for two large glasses of cold brew. And it will still taste as good (more coffee, less milk/creamer) in the rapid brewer. As long as the instructions are followed, I don’t find it “watered down” at all, as some reviews have stated. My last batch was quite strong (1 hour spinning). Deviating from the instructions (like when I just dumped the entire 2/3 cup of coffee in at once), and you might experience different results.My biggest knock on this product would be the fragile glass carafe. Be careful!! I actually broke the first one in a week (my mistake, as it was bumped off the counter). I can’t say that any glass would have survived that fall on a wooden floor. To order a replacement carafe from Presto would be $20, plus $9 shipping, so I bought another new Dorothy for $35 (Prime, no shipping). Now I have spare parts. But this carafe feels very fragile and I use extreme caution even washing it (I hand wash all parts even through it states that it is dishwasher safe). That brings me to my second criticism, cleaning the Dorothy. Let’s just say it is messy! Coffee grinds all over the place trying to get the press part/plunger off of the stirring cup. I’ve learned to use a plastic bag (grocery store bag or bread bag) and place the plunger, with stirring cup still attached, in the bag and release the stirring cup from the plunger (which once you know how, it’s easy to release) all in the bag. Yes you have some liquid in the bag, but this keeps most of the grounds from going down into the plumbing. I just have a paper towel or two in the bag to absorb the liquid.I enjoy having fresh cold brew that I can make relatively quick, so for that, I recommend the Dorothy. I will continue to use my old cold brew maker, but definitely have room in my kitchen for the Dorothy! My daughter also thinks it’s so cool to watch, and she doesn’t drink cold brew, but offers to make it for me!! Bonus!”
