I used my entire upper body-weight; one could also use a rubber mallet on the corners. This is intentional, I assume for long-term storage integrity. To remove the lid, you must pull the (in hindsight, extremely obvious) pull-tab to remove a strip of plastic around the entire bottom edge of the lid. Think of how an old-style tin of anchovies (without a soda can-style tab), or an old ration can, is opened with the included key. Once this plastic strip is removed, the lid fits tightly but is pretty easy to snap on and remove again. I didn’t think to take a picture of the lids before removing the strips, but you can compare my photo with the listing photos to see the difference.The buckets are perfectly fine and the plastic isn’t too thin. I am using them for RODI water. My single complaint about these is that the pull-tabs on the lids required a flush-cutter or scissors at some points to remove cleanly, and the edge can be rough in spots afterward. If you intend to open the buckets and not just store stuff in them long-term, I recommended removing the strip prior to putting the lid on the bucket as it’s much easier. — John D.
