Customer Reviews
Works great! Made cooking so easy when we were camping.
This is reasonably priced compared to other products out there. It does allow for you to lift off the grate in order to feed more wood into the fire, however, there are no tools provided to do so.. It seems to fit better with the grill portion inverted. There are two right angle hooks on it, which make no sense at all to me. The base support has three loops which support the grill. The two hooks cannot fit into two of these loops simultaneously. I generally use stainless steel heavy duty grill plates designed for propane barbecue grills for cooking as I’m often using cast-iron or a wok versus straight up grilling. This product seems to be appropriate size for a 20 inch fire pit. I look forward to testing it out shortly. I will update if it warps or does anything un toward. I wish it was a little heavier duty than it is, but it is likely sufficient for the task.
Complete Buying Guide for Stainless Steel Cooking Grate For Fire Pit
Essential Factors We Consider
When evaluating stainless steel cooking grates for fire pits, several critical factors determine performance and longevity. First, always verify the material grade—look for 304 or higher food-grade stainless steel to ensure rust resistance and safe food contact. Next, measure your fire pit opening precisely to guarantee proper fit without gaps that could cause uneven cooking or safety hazards. Durability matters too: thicker gauges (3-4mm) withstand repeated heating cycles better than thinner alternatives. Finally, consider portability needs—folding designs save storage space, while solid units offer maximum stability for heavy meals.
Budget Planning
Stainless steel fire pit grates range from budget-friendly mesh options under $30 to premium solid constructions exceeding $100. Entry-level models often feature thinner materials and simpler designs suitable for occasional use. Mid-range grates ($40-$70) typically balance cost with improved durability and features like rotating handles. High-end units ($80+) use commercial-grade materials, larger sizes, and specialized fits for specific fire pit brands. Remember that investing in quality pays dividends through longer service life and better cooking results—especially if you plan regular outdoor entertaining.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right cooking grate for your fire pit transforms casual backyard fires into culinary adventures. Whether you prioritize size, portability, or brand compatibility, our tested recommendations cover every scenario from solo camping trips to large family gatherings. Always match your selection to both your fire pit specifications and intended usage frequency. With proper care, a quality stainless steel grate will deliver delicious meals season after season while resisting corrosion and warping better than alternative materials.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I know what size grate fits my fire pit?
A: Measure the interior diameter of your fire pit opening at its widest point. Most standard fire pits accommodate 14″, 15″, 19.5″, 30″, or 36″ grates. Always add 1-2 inches clearance on each side for proper seating without binding.
Q: Can I use any metal grate safely over an open flame?
A: No—only use food-grade stainless steel or cast iron grates rated for high heat. Avoid carbon steel without seasoning or aluminum, as they can release harmful chemicals or warp dangerously when exposed to direct flames.
Q: How should I clean my stainless steel fire pit grate?
A: Allow the grate to cool completely before cleaning. Use warm soapy water and a stiff brush to remove residue. For stubborn buildup, soak in vinegar solution then scrub. Never use abrasive pads that could scratch the surface and create rust spots.
Q: Do I need special tools to install these grates?
A: Most modern designs simply rest atop fire pit rings or brackets without requiring hardware. However, some modular systems include clips or adapters—check manufacturer instructions for your specific model to ensure secure placement.
Q: Will a stainless steel grate fit my Solo Stove or Big Green Egg?
A: Yes—several models are purpose-built for popular appliances like Solo Stove Bonfire (19.5″) and ceramic kamados (18″). Look for “universal fit” or brand-specific listings to guarantee compatibility with your exact unit.
