Step 1: Collect Your Tools and Supplies

Before you begin any type of cleaning, it is important to get ready. You will need different tools and supplies for your project to run smoothly. Tools will help you get rid of dirt and facilitate the washing process.

Some of the tools and essential supplies you will need include:

  • Water
  • Rug shampoo or mild soap
  • Brush with soft bristles
  •  Bucket

Some other tools you might need but are optional include:

  • Garden hose
  • Rubber loves
  • Wet-dry vacuum.

Step 2: Get Rid of Dirt and Debris from the Mat

A kitchen rug is bound to pick up dirt and debris from spill and kitchen traffic. Having pets does not help the situation either. They might leave some pets hair on the rug, which is difficult to clean on a regular basis. Since this procedure of washing a kitchen rug involves deep cleaning, you might need to remove all the dirt and debris.

Using a vacuum, get rid of all the dirt and debris from the kitchen rug. You not only want to vacuum the top side but also the bottom. This will ensure that all the tiny pieces of dirt and spills are out of the way. Using a brush attachment is recommended for households with pets.

The brush compartment gets rid of any stray hairs that might be caught up in the mat. Removing all dirt will make it easier for you to wash the rug as you will only be left with the stubborn stains.

Step 3: Mix Your Cleaning Solution

This is the step where you get your cleaner ready. When it comes to cleaning solutions, there are different varieties available in the market. You can use a rug shampoo that is specifically meant to clean rugs. If you do not have a rug shampoo, an alternative will be mild dish soap.

Whichever solution you choose to use, follow the instructions from the manufacturer carefully. Add the cleaning solution to a bucket of warm water.

Step 4: Conduct a Color Test

It is important to conduct a color test to ensure that the cleaning solution you are going to use will not cause colors to run. Test for running by placing the corner of the rug in the solution. If you ascertain that the kitchen rug is colorfast, it is safe to proceed to the next step.

Step  5 : Do the Actual Washing

Use a sponge or a brush with soft bristles to later the rug with cleaning solution and water. Scrub the rug in circular motion to overlap all corners and ensure every part is washed. Let it sit in the water for five minutes before rinsing. Any dirt that will have been left out will lift away when the solution sets in.

Step 6: Rinse the Kitchen Rug

Using a garden hose rinse out all the soap from the rug.  You can also use buckets of water if you do not have a garden hose. Ensure that all the cleaning solution you used is removed from the kitchen rug.

If you want to know that all the solution has come off, you should observe the runoff water. If it is crystal clear, well done! All the solution is rinsed. However, if it is still dirty, use more water.

Step 7: Remove Excess Water

You are almost done with your project. At this particular point, you might want to get rid of all the excess water on the rug. Getting all the water out of your kitchen rug makes it dry faster as opposed to having it out with all the water. If you have a wet-dry vacuum, use it in the direction of the nap.

Step 8 : Leave the Kitchen Rug Out to Dry

This is the second last step where you are supposed to let the rug dry. There are many ways you can do this. One of the most preferred is drying the rug flat. When you lay the kitchen rug flat, the top gets ample exposure to dry completely.

Once the top part is dry you can flip it to dry the bottom part. If you want to speed up the process, you can use a fan. When you ascertain that your kitchen rug is fully dry, you can take it back to the room.

Step 9 : Brush Out or Vacuum Your Rug

It is common to have threads and fibers squished in the rug during cleaning. Reviving them is as easy as running a vacuum on the rug or using a brush. Be sure to use a brush with soft bristles to avoid spoiling it. You’re all done!

If you have followed the above steps and managed to clean your kitchen rug successfully, congratulations! Not only have you learned how to clean your kitchen rug but you also get to enjoy a fresh rug that is deep cleaned and smells awesome. You will no longer need to hire professionals because you have developed the art of washing your rug.
